That's the amount of time it took from campaign kick-off at midnight yesterday to achieve 1,000 members in our campaign Facebook group. Although as many of you remember from last year, when I was involved in trying to gauge how Facebook participation reflected actual turnout and outcomes, to little success, it is still exciting to see how quickly our campaign generated such interest.
Mattie and Andrew visited several organizations yesterday, meeting with students involved around campus and talking about our platform of proven experience and practical purpose. You know the campaign season is in full swing when you run into other candidates jockeying to address the same crowds and waiting their turn to make their case for election. Also, by the residue left from campaign stickers on your clothes.
We also spent a considerable portion of yesterday preparing for the debate to be held Wednesday in the Connections Lounge of the Arkansas Union at 7:30pm. There are many pressing issues in this election, particularly ones precipitated by the current economic climate that has overtaken the country. One of the primary concerns that we have to face in implementing policy and programming initiatives is finding ways to increase the quality of student life and the educational experience, without passing on a higher cost to the students in these dire economic circumstances. Lots of ideas sound great on paper, but when it comes to cost, we cannot afford to pass the margin on to the students through increased student fees or tuition.
Today, we will spend more time preparing for the debate, but the business of ASG continues, despite the campaign. As such, Mattie and myself will be taking a break from campaigning to attend ASG Senate tonight at 6:00pm in the Bell Engineering auditorium.
Hope to see you all on the trail.
