Tonight was the ASG-sponsored debate, held in the Arkansas Union in the connections lounge. My best estimate after a head count was that over 150 students attended the debate, which lasted close to two hours! Mattie and Andrew knocked each question out of the ballpark, and were unequivocally well prepared for the debate, based on style, depth of knowledge, and the conciseness of their responses.
As with many ASG debates in the past, the answers soon turned to buzz words relating to new initiatives, programs, and ideas, with each candidate pulling from the others'. The Bookhout-LeNarz ticket was emphatic in its adherence to our platform, which covered every topic undertaken in the debate. Mattie stressed time and again the role of representation that ASG holds, particularly with being the students strongest voice to the administration. Andrew repeated his promise to hold committee appointees accountable, and make the process more transparent, along with highlighting our ticket's sustainability initiatives.
To give credit where credit is due, the Holloway/Bame and Powell/Sharp tickets were well-versed in their platforms, and made the debate lively and interesting. We are looking forward to continuing to engage them in dialogue, and I certainly hope that these ideas do not get lost in the transition from eventual victor, to incumbent administration.
Keep on talking, people. This race is far from over.
